Kas is a relatively compact harbour town on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. The town itself is on mountain slopes which descend to the quayside, which is home to day boats and ferries to the Greek island of Meis/Kastellorizo just a 40-minute journey across the bay.
The town was probably founded by the Lycians but with a Roman and Ottoman history too. However, the community has always been known for fishing and growing fruit as well as almonds and honey.
Many of the Greek residents left the area after the population exchange at the end of the Greco/Turk War in 1923. Some of the old homes on the slopes around the town remain empty.
Since the 1990s, tourism has become an increasingly important market. The town is now carving a niche for itself as a destination, particularly popular with visitors from Germany and the UK.
