These include the beach and ruins at Patara – reputed to be the birthplace of St Nicholas – and Kaputas Beach. Although in the Antalya province, Kalkan is more closely related to Fethiye.

It was first established as a fishing port and the only safe harbour between Kaş and Fethiye. Whitewashed houses descend to the sea, many adorned with brightly-coloured bougainvillea. The town averages 300 days of sunshine a year.
